DIRECTOR'S BIOGRAPHY
Antony Petrou is a Cypriot filmmaker known for bold, emotionally charged storytelling and a visually distinctive approach to social themes. A graduate of Central Saint Martins and the New York Film Academy (MFA), he fuses a fine-art sensibility with cinematic precision to create films that are both visceral and poetic.
His debut feature, We Are Monster, a harrowing portrait of the racially motivated murder of Zahid Mubarek, premiered to critical acclaim in the UK and US before being acquired by Netflix. The film established Petrou as a director unafraid to confront identity, violence, and redemption.
His award-winning shorts and features have screened internationally and are recognised for their striking imagery, human depth, and unflinching honesty.
He has recently completed Cinema Rialto, an animated short funded by the Cyprus Deputy Ministry of Culture, and is preparing to shoot Paint Me a Lie, a powerful true-story short inspired by events the director himself lived through.
Petrou is also developing his next feature film, Caught in My Shadow, an emotionally raw psychological drama about grief, guilt, and resilience set within the world of amateur boxing.
His work continues to explore the fragile borders between truth and perception, love and loss, always with the belief that cinema should move, challenge, and remember.
