It is the first years of the Republic. A teacher has been appointed to the newly opened school of the village for the first time. The teacher is at the blackboard reading the new Turkish letters, the poem of the republic and the 10th year anthem with his students. When the teacher returns to the blackboard, the students are silent. The teacher and his students look sadly outside at Fatma, who is working with her mother and father in the field with a plough. Fatma goes up the hill and starts to draw a picture, listening to the sound of the school. The teacher and the students, curiousl, go up the hill to Fatma. They look at Fatma’s drawing and are mesmerised. A conversation takes place between the teacher and Fatma. Fatma walks step by step down the hill towards the school.
